Life's great reward for scooting to ShopRite for milk and tart green Granny Smith apples [Figgy's favorite] at 8:53 P.M. on a Saturday night: Hearing John Prine's "Lake Marie" on the radio while coasting along Alexander Avenue.
I'd heard it once before on WFUV, 90.7 FM, the NPR station I adore. [Link: www.wfuv.org.] Until last night, I didn't know the artist's name. The song is quirky but so lovely: standing by peaceful waters. Wish I could be at my Cape right now, or Greenwich with Sis....near water. But for now, that has to wait.
Thank you, Mr. John Prine.
****Video from 2004 Philadelphia Folk Festival. Thank you to Taylor510ceL9 for posting it on YouTube for me to find. Per wikipedia: Prine is the son of William Prine and Verna Hamm. He started playing guitar at age 14, taught by his brother, David. He was a postman for five years and served in the Army during the Vietnam War era, although he served in Germany, before beginning his musical career in Chicago.
