Dressing Up Workaday Appliances

Designer patterns stepped things up in surprising ways at the International Home and Housewares Show in Chicago this week.

Red Hot
As the owner of the HP Mini laptop by Vivienne Tam [perfect purse size, and red, with purple and pink peony design, see above], I can tell you that adding style to utilitarian equipment shakes spice into your life.

It also doesn't hurt that a year ago, after HP rolled out the mighty mini with a striking ad in Vogue, you could also order the lovely matching Vivienne Tam silk chiffon floral scarf [which I must remember to rescue from my torn house] and padded tote bag.

Little Vac That Could
Dirt Devil's Fantasy Tattoo Canister vacuum does its job dressed in great colors--like spunky purple--with a mod design. It's the only model in the Dirt Devil line that doesn't come in the brand's signature red. Intended as a starter vac for dorm room or apartment, Fantasy is "tattooed" with fun patterns and has auto cord rewind. Available for a limited time. Its looks alone leave others in the dust.

Blows You Away
Helen of Troy, which began as a wig company in the 1960s in Texas [but no longer makes wigs], produces the Bed Head and Revlon hair appliance lines. Check Target for the Designer Series black, white and floral hair dryer, $24.99 and straightener, $19.99. They're hot.

No Flash in the Pan
Scrambling eggs or cooking veggie breakfast patties in a glam black and white floral skillet gives your day a helping of beauty. When you hang the pan on your pot rack, you see the design; otherwise, it's facing the fire. Giaretti skillets made in Italy, now available on the West Coast.
