Drove a lot today. Was so tired I almost fell asleep at the wheel. But I caught a great interview with actress/singer/songwriter Zooey Deschanel on Soundcheck, NPR Radio.
She and musical partner Matt Ward are in a band called She & Him. I can't find her exact quote, but during the interview, she was asked something like, do you think people will have certain expectations for you now, after the success of your first album?
Zooey said that when she creates, she doesn't think about what people expect. That thinking that way would change her creation process.
I like that rule, for writing from the heart. When I start thinking of the audience rather than the tale, stories shrink.
Don't fence me in.
