Moms Don't Get Sick

It seemed my mom never got sick when I was growing up. As a teen, I started to marvel over it. Wait a minute, how can it be that Mommy never gets sick? Is there something magical that keeps moms healthy? I compared notes with some friends and we all agreed it was true, our moms didn't get sick.

Most moms don't really have the time or space to be sick, they're so busy taking care of the household and everyone in it.

But I have a nasty summer cold, and I feel as sick as a dog. I'm all congested, and even two Nyquil gel tabs at bedtime could not put me to sleep. Not even followed, in a last-ditch attempt, by a sip of whiskey at about 1:30 A.M., when Figgy was really upset about something that happened while sitting at the computer but would not tell us what. Her friend L. was sleeping over and Figgy insisted she had to go out--at that hour--and run around the building [loyal L. at her side] to calm down. This afternoon, she had some residual upset and I asked her to crush the graham cracker crumbs for Moey's birthday cheesecake to get out any anger. That seemed to help. She relished it. She has a great sense of humor.

I've been running around trying to take care of things with Dad--yesterday, I was at the hospital on one end and at the nursing home later. But a call with my editor was about 1 1/2 hours today, longer than I expected, and I didn't get to Van Dyk Manor.  [I don't like the term nursing home, and anyway, he's there for rehab primarily now, so let's just call it Van Dyk.] H. went at 8, and Dad was already sleeping, so he didn't wake him.

Tomorrow is another day, and I look forward to feeling better, being organized and productive, and seeing Dad--and later, Moey, for birthday pizza.

  1. It's true... moms are not allowed to get sick. The younger the kids, the truer this is. Feel better, Al. Love, Linda

  2. Feel better, Alice. It's your body telling you to ease up a bit (at least in your head, if that's possible). I remember the one time my mom got so sick with the flu. I was 11 and my little brother was rummaging around in her closet and she didn't even care! I called my paternal grandparents in a panic! They hopped in the car and came over to take care of us.

It was such a rare occurrence, I don't think I'll ever forget it.
