Father Time

Not enough time in the day. Not when we're young and healthy and chasing little kids or chauffeuring big ones or grocery-shopping or cooking dinner or doing dishes. Working, exercising, driving, reading, seeing friends. Stopping for a tall iced coffee in a grande cup [extra room for milk]. Not enough time in the day.

But maybe too much time in the day if we're on the other end of the spectrum, pretty much lying in bed unless we get dragged up to go to rehab, where we can't do anything, can't stand up, let alone walk. Yeah, maybe we spent our life being brilliant, inventing antibiotics, being married, raising kids, having a home, doing every bit of yard work and house painting and driveway tarring and oil changing. But now, now, time is all we have, and we can't use it.

When we were young, we longed for vacation days from work...and told our daughters that, once they started working and could understand. We went out to dinner, and took our car to inspection, and planted tomatoes, and now, now we lie alone in a bed and sleep a lot. Food is pumped into our belly through a tube and someone else puts our socks on. Our granddaughter comes to visit but we can't really muster up much energy even then.

How is that fair? Please tell me, how is it fair?

  1. Alice, this is very moving. Thank you for posting it. Please bring our love to your dad next time you go. I’m going to church this morning – will keep Uncle J on my list of ongoing miracle requests. Love always, Linda

    It's not fair.

  2. Hi Lin. Today was Grandparents' Day and H., Figgy, Punch and I went to visit. Dad was doing so much better today, but terribly on Friday, which really depressed me, Sis and Don when we saw him. Punch was up on the bed talking to him today. We all enjoyed the visit. thanks for the good note. thanks for your prayers. Love, alice

  3. P.S. Forgot to say, Linda, that the balloon you and Judi brought Dad is in his room to cheer him up and Punch loved playing with it. xo

  4. I am so happy that he was better today. Guess there will be good days and not so good ones. Let's hope the good ones outnumber the others by many.
