This beautiful photo of Greenwich Point is by Christina Tracy Coas; I found it at panoramio.com. |
Today, the little 3 1/2-year-old girl in white socks and sneakers and a dress that says L-O-V-E over a black tulle skirt [it caught her eye at Target, and I bought it for her] went with me to visit Sis and Don. We left in the afternoon, after I had gone to boot camp, visited Dad and grocery-shopped. Figgy had off from school for Columbus Day, and had gone to Pennsylvania with a friend's family overnight. H. had other fish to fry, physically and emotionally. Sug couldn't go, b/c no dogs allowed at this time of year at Greenwich Point.
Enough said. Here's the good stuff:
- Punch saw Margaret's Bengal cats--a mother and her son. Margaret is a neighbor of Sis's, and Punch had been asking me on the ride over if she could see the cats again. She stroked them and rolled their toy balls on the floor.
- She loved going to the beach at Greenwich Point. She sat right in the water in the tulle dress. I did not think to bring a swimsuit for her. Should have known. She collected seashells and put them in the empty sherbet container Sis gave her. She played with a boy her age named Sam, whose parents were flying awesome kites. And Sam shared his rakes and shovels with Punch, which was really sweet.
- There's a glassed-in bookcase at Greenwich Point where you can take books or leave books. It is so old-fashioned, I love it. I took an Ann Rule true-crime paperback.
- She saw a lighthouse and sailboats and a masterful sunset.
- She pointed out the Halloween decorations we saw along the winding country road when we walked with Sis and Don to a pizza place for dinner. [She was afraid of the big, black spider on someone's door, but we explained that it's not real.]
- I loved showing her the Tappan Zee Bridge on the way back, telling her what H. and I always told Figgy on drives back from the Cape. That the blue lights look like a twinkling necklace, and what if a chimpanzee lived on the Tappan Zee? Just to share a silly rhyme.
- I know lightning can be dangerous, but we saw a kind of cool show on the way back to her home tonight. It felt safe in our car, as we rolled along with the radio playing, lightning cracking in the sky. She felt settled enough to sink into a deep sleep in her car seat.
I don't put myself on a pedestal higher than Punch's Mommy. We both have feet of clay. But I do really like it when I can take Punch far away to the edge of the land so she can put her feet in the water and see a fresh new view.
Good night.
lovely, alice. you are all so lucky to have each other.
