Ring & Run

The bell rang at about 11:30 this morning. I opened the door to find a short, round, happy little snowman--about two to three feet tall--staring me in the face. His smile and eyes were made of pennies. Though he was frozen, he melted my heart immediately. I laughed and laughed as I looked around the front yard for a clue as to who put him there.

Suddenly, I heard a voice and a chuckle. Will, the good young boy next-door, emerged from behind the shrub to my right. It was the cutest thing ever. Will is nine, and he brightens our block by simply being himself. He sells lemonade with his sister, rides his bike, sleds, throws snowballs and plays soccer or football with his Dad, Andy. Just this weekend, Will was recording bird sightings in a very official-looking notepad.

Apparently, he and Andy were moving this firmly packed fellow around from stoop to stoop, to surprise and delight some lucky people. Sugar was barking and barking at the snowman through the glass storm door. Will said the round one's name was Mr. Peanut, because he was shaped like that.

I tried to get H. to come see, but he was not feeling well and was lying down. I told Will that. He had heard me calling up the stairs for H.

Did Figgy see it? asked Will.
Oh, no, she didn't. She's not home right now. I bet she would have loved it.
Sugar saw it, Will said with a grin, glad of another witness.

Will and I decided that when Figgy got home, I'd phone him and he'd ring our bell again and pull the trick on her. Alas, Figgy had too much to manage this evening, so that didn't happen.

But I will be forever grateful for my visit today from a boy, his Dad and a cheerful portable snowman. These little gifts mean so much. In fact, in some ways, they mean everything.

Good night.

  1. Such a nice story. You never know where these little gifts will come from. I don't know about in North Jersey but down here in SJ we got almost 6" of snow overnight; enough to keep little Will busy making lots of snowmen! Love, Linda
