Into NYC for a Sobering Reason

Just returned from NYC, where Patsy, Nicky and I went for the Upper East Side wake of our boot camp friend Lisa's beloved Dad. Lisa is tiny but mighty, a fast sprinter across that field, the petite mother of three well-mannered young boys. Her family is so close, and her Dad died young....65. Our boot camp group has been collectively worried about her, since it was a long, intense illness. Lisa couldn't make it to boot camp for months; she was at her Dad's side as much as possible. So boot camp went to Lisa's house. We started a dinner chain, and took turns bringing everything from lasagna [Heidi] to chicken cutlets [Patsy], often with sides and fixings.

After the wake ended around 9 P.M., Nicky, Patsy and I ducked into Serafina on Madison Avenue and 79th Street--I'd walked by it a million times but never been in. We had wine and good bread dipped in delicious olive oil, then shared salmon and tuna tartare; thin-crust margherita pizza; and penne with tomatoes and pine nuts. All very, very good. For a sweet ending, Nicky ordered affogato [I read that the word means drowned in Italian], in this case, chocolate ice cream with a wave of espresso poured over, and three spoons. Nice. Total cost for each of us, counting generous tip: $42. Not bad. And even better since we had a free parking space right in front of the restaurant.

I have to go to bed so I can get up early and work, revising, clarifying and strengthening a story outline to send my editor. Good night.

TCOY
  1. Iced coffee.
  2. Private Benjamin.
  3. H. took care of me, too. He, Fig and Sug were asleep by time I got home, but he left one of my favorite movies, White Christmas, playing on the TV in the living room. He knows how much I love it.
