Cooking in Living Color

I adore this cookbook.
Turns out 1957 is not just the year H. was born. It's also the year this cookbook came out. I love flipping through it. So colorful and hopeful; life seemed simpler. Food was in living color, even if it was weird, like Pickle Fans, or Polka-dotted Macaroni and Cheese, made with "penny-thin slices" of frankfurters on top. But I want to make a recipe. Maybe Marshmallow Fudge? Peter Rabbit Cake? They're all so intriguing. They take me back to fifties style. And they're conversation starters.

Our friends Anne and Michael found it for me at a yard sale, I think. They also mined the lawns and tables for my wonderful pie basket--for transporting cakes, pies and tarts. These are such happy gifts. I wonder who used that pie basket before me, and if he or she toted pecan or pumpkin? Food for thought.

Good night.
