H. read Punch her bedtime stories tonight. "Come lay with us," she said to me.
So I did. After two books, he read the next chapter of Charlotte's Web. "Charlotte dies in the end," Punch said. [She and I watched the excellent movie version with Julia Roberts voicing the spider.]
"It doesn't matter," he said. "A book's not about just the ending. It's about the whole story."
Somehow, I found that comforting. Life is not about some rotten patches and ruts but about the whole story. And there is still a whole story to be told.
I also like the way H. did Wilbur's voice--so funny.
Back between flannel sheets. Good nite.
Lovely.
ReplyDeleteI just read your back page memoir in Coast Living, 12/11-1/12 issue. Loved it! It made me want to read more Alice stuff. Why? because of this: (quote) "To keep your balance on shifting sands. To stand tall against an undertow of sadness or self doubt. To honor the past but live in the present." Your words! thank you, thank you. I really needed that. You, Alice, are a Godsend! I shall carry the vision of your "Dad's Gift" with me this holiday season, it has calmed my soul. Thank You, Peace and Love.
