White Night--at Casa Blanca

Finally a moment to recap Lydia & George's annual holiday party on Saturday night. I want to remember it when I'm older and besides, it's just fun to describe.

Every year, they pick a theme...one year it was "Mad Men," and many of my stylish neighbors/friends got pretty salon updos and dressed like Betty Draper and/or Don's secretaries. This year, I'm so behind the ball with Punch in the house that I didn't even check the theme until Saturday afternoon. It was White Christmas.

Angel Food
I had told Lydia I'd bring a dessert and was planning to fill my parents' big crystal bowl to the brim with ripe raspberries and a cloud of freshly whipped cream. So I figured that could pass for white. But I panicked a little at the last minute and decided to also bring a Santa tray of fluffy white and pale pink peppermint marshmallows dipped in fine dark chocolate. [Punch had fun making some, too, on a separate snowman tray for Fig and Marissa.]

In addition to their traditional huge ham, soft rolls and coleslaw and an ample platter of sushi, G & L served three white cocktails [I had a Snowflake, in a martini glass], white bean dip, white pizza, creamy white Brie. Lesley made little snowy cheese balls. Amy brought powdered-sugar dusted chocolate crinkle cookies. Paige made white sandwich cookies and Rice Krispies treats with white chocolate and marshmallow. Someone brought a platter of White Fudge Covered Oreos.

White Robes
One party guest, a real estate developer in town, wore a plush white terrycloth spa robe and white slippers. Later, he disrobed to reveal a white chef's coat, and popped a toque on his head. Lydia had a gorgeous floor-length white pleated skirt and feminine white blouse; George was in a white dinner jacket. Gary chose a fisherman's sweater and Paige, a dress that was white on top, black on the bottom.  Lesley and Julie wore lovely white and silvery white ladylike tops. A lot of the men went with white dress shirts. H. left before me, because I wasn't ready yet, and walked back soon after. Everyone is in white, he said. So he promptly put on his business shirt and a white and black tie.

I pulled out a long Tory Burch white skirt and a sleeveless fuzzy white turtleneck sweater. As usual, I was too late to take time to find my good red lipstick or put on mascara. I plan to change that! Tomorrow night is the boot camp holiday party and I want to put makeup on! My best accessory was clean hair, blown out that day at Vamp.

Snow Globe
Not only was it snowing like crazy all day and into the night--L & G had decorated inside to look like a winter wonderland. This year, their tree was all white lights and decorations. The walls were decorated with white and silver snowflakes, twinkling in the glow of candlelight. Best of all, they made a towering snowman. Lydia drew it and George cut it out from plywood and put three holes in it, so we could do a fake snowball toss, like on the boardwalk (except you use bean bags there). Gary won, getting three balls in. He got the bottle of Prosecco. I got no balls in.

The night was snowy and sweet, right down to the last detail. We all left with handfuls of marshmallows on sticks. Each plump pillow had been dunked in chocolate and then rolled in festive toppings like crushed peppermints. They were on long stirrers, to be twirled into cocoa or coffee.

Good night, sweet dreams. George & Lydia make memories again, this time in Casa Blanca.

TCOY
  1. Boot camp in the park.
  2. Short nap.
  3. Deep breaths.
