Sick Day

Punchy was home sick from second grade today with a bad cough that kept her up a lot of the night. She didn't sleep well for the last two nights and so H. and I have not been sleeping well, either. She either sprinted across the small, short hall in our 1920s house to jump into our bed before dawn or stayed up fidgeting and coughing in her own bed, unable to settle down. Even with purple nighttime cold and cough medicine.

Then Figgy came home after her Montclair State classes today and she, too, is sick with a cold. I'm hoping I don't catch it from either of them. Right now, I've got the kettle on to make them mugs of tea.

I had to fit my work in today in between fixing Punch a PB banana smoothie, Quaker peach oatmeal, sliced kiwis, hot tea, mashed potatoes and chicken sausage, sliced apple. We made Rosemary Cashews from Barefoot in Paris. [They are a "compliant" food, meaning the ingredients are all allowed on my level of the Whole Life Challenge. I made them vegan today so Fig could have some, replacing the 1 T of melted butter with 1 T of olive oil.] I also made a pan of vegan baked ziti again, with a nice, superfast sauce.

Though the TV babysat Punch for a while--she watched two movies while I worked ["Agent Cody Banks" from 2003 and "Goosebumps"]--I felt good about the writing I did today. I was conscious of my craft in my sun room office, of my fingers flying over my keyboard, over choosing the right words. Deleting the repeats. Tightening up the text. Adding precise details. I was writing about HomeStories, this really cool home design place on Montague Place in Brooklyn Heights by the Promenade. [Kim, maybe you've been by there? It's on the parlor floor of an historic brownstone, and when I hear parlor floor, I always think of your Brooklyn home.] I wish I had gone in person, but by today, the deadline was upon me and so I did the interview by phone. This spot is definitely on my bucket list to visit.

After I submitted the article via email, I settled on the couch, coercing Punchy into watching an OnDemand movie under "Kids" that I've long wanted to see. She always refused. It was "Back to the Beach" [1987] starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon, with Connie Stevens, Gilligan, the Skipper, Don Adams from "Get Smart," and the "Leave It to Beaver" actors who played June Cleaver, Wally and the Beave. It was campy and frothy, but we both liked it, anyway. It involved surfing and a lot of polka dot outfits [including a swimsuit] worn by Annette.

Long day. H. has been out writing an article [at coffee shops in town] all day and evening. Good night.

TCOY
  1. Healthy foods eaten today: Mushrooms, green beans, steel-cut oatmeal.
  2. Hot bath. So relaxing. Got Figgy and Punch to each take one too with the salts I bought at Whole Foods yesterday.
