Punchy has wanted a phone forever and ever and ever.
Tonight, November 11 (11/11–lucky!), 2020, the time has finally come. Punchy is 13 years, 8 months and 4 days old.
We put off the inevitable for a good long time. Behavior has improved. Grades have some room to grow but seeing more respect and commitment. And for heaven’s sake, we are in a pandemic and school is remote.
She is sooooooooo excited. She chose the black iPhone 11. (That was our agreement--not the new 12.) I’m amazed at the new gadget capabilities. Her 11 has Face ID; clear, crisp camera eye; and a nice big screen compared to my iPhone 7, which looks dinky in comparison.
The 11 comes in colors to love: red, white, green, purple, yellow. It’s an icy mint green and a lavender, so pretty. Using my phone, Punch polled her friends on what color to get. She was between black and white but settled on black to "twin" with her friend B. Her phone case is clear, so the sleek black shows.
We also have a 30-day trial period in place for her usage. With help from one of our support angels, we set guidelines (plug phone in kitchen outlet, not bedroom, at 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; no unsafe sites; etc. etc.).
If she breaks a rule, she loses the phone for a day. After a month, we will evaluate how it went and we put in place the option to say no, that didn’t work, let’s take that phone back and reevaluate in six months.
