Late Bloomer

Our Junior Girl Scout troop gave each of us co-leaders a beautiful parting gift at the end of fifth grade at Bradford School.

It was a potted rose 🌹 plant with delicate pale pink blooms.

That was in 2006. Figgy and her friends--including two Scouts named Ali, Stephanie and Deanna--were moving on to the three middle schools in town. I tried to keep our troop going but the interest flagged. They had been together since the Brownie years!

That rosebush just gave me two beautiful flowers. They smell so lovely, like the softest, finest French perfume. I clipped one and put it in my grandmother Alice’s blue streaked bud vase. I keep burying my nose in the furled petals. I placed the vase on the counter next to the sink to make the dishwashing chore more pleasant.

Next year I will remember to fertilize them a bit more.

🌹 🥀 ❤️
