Those two words say it all: discipline, hard work, sweat, camaraderie, strength, power, self-confidence. |
But I'm dreading getting up in the dark and, to add insult to injury, having to sprint, lunge and shuffle when most normal people will still be sleeping.
I've gotten up this early when Mom would have us all get up in the dark and throw our luggage in the car to get a start on our summer drive to the Cape. And, when I lived in my apartment by the sea in Ocean Grove, NJ and commuted to NYC for work, I got up at the ungodly hour of 5:15 to catch a train at about 6:45. [I had to walk about 10 minutes to the Asbury Park station.] Of course, when Figgy and Punch were infants, I got up in the dark for feedings, stumbling sleepily toward the crib.
But I am much, much older now. And the people who go to the 5:15 class are what I call warriors. They are fast and strong and amazing--and apparently unfazed by working out before daylight. But I also know that I like them. We see them at the holiday party and at the special free holiday workouts Patsy and Martha do on Thanksgiving, New Year's Eve, etc.
The good part is that Patsy is going to give me a ride--we'll leave @ 5 A.M. That will soften the blow a bit; I'll feel less alone and crazy.
Despite all my whining, if you live in or near Montclair, I suggest checking out her Accelerate Boot Camp. You can email her at patsy@XLR8fit.com with any questions. She is very, very nice and very, very fit and I highly recommend it. The camaraderie is great. Plus, Patsy gave each of us a great black cotton ribbed boot camp tank that says GO HARD OR GO HOME on the back.
Good night.
First of all, I give you so much credit for your commitment to this hard work three times a week. I'm so impressed. Second, a class that starts at 5:15 AM sounds crazy, even for an early riser like me. But what a great idea – to give people the opportunity to attend and also have enough time to get to their jobs. Have a great day... I hope that you did make it there this morning, Mrs. Nightowl. Love, Linda
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lin. It is a commitment. I am happy I've stuck to it, for two years now. Was just shoveling snow--I am just so much stronger, in so many ways, due to boot camp. I made it there. Yes, most of the people who go to that early one head to their jobs after, I think. I hope you are well. love alice xoxoxo
ReplyDeletei am wildly impressed with you!
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed impressive, Alice and though I had the opportunity to join you this morning having woken at 4:30am, I decided against it and hunkered down under the blankets for another few hours. Needless to say, my punishment was to slalom down the road in my car at 9:30am only to be exercised within an inch of my life for an hour in the Clifton soccer dome. It was worth it, too! Patsy told me about Michael's comment this morning - I had to laugh as you deserve many BIG points for not only showing up but also be able to smile and laugh through it. Kudos to you, dear Alice and have a lovely weekend. You're a dedicated bootcamper.

Wow, 5:15! For years I was afraid if I tried to work out early in the morning I would hurt myself badly and not realize it till I woke up mid-morning, after the coffee kicks in. Now, the only time I could squeeze from my schedule has me in the gym by 6 am, and that is quite early enough for me. Twice a week, at least. But without a half cup of coffee inside me I don't think I could ever do it. I can feel the caffeine kick in after I've been there about half an hour.
ReplyDeleteI, too, love what it does for me. Hooray for you, shoveling snow! (And I'm so jealous, we still have *no snow* at all for the year in DC. Maybe tomorrow.)
Wow, I should really shovel snow, read a daily meditation and take a long nap more often. I woke up to the surprise of more comments from friends! But see, i think getting up at 4:15 AM had me nap-hungry. yikes.
ReplyDeleteKim, thank you. as you know, i am wildly impressed with you, too. i truly wish i ate more healthfully, fruits and veggies and good homemade things, etc. You are a good role model--yoga, too.
Heidi, you crack me up, girl. I missed you this morning, though! Michael is quieter at the 5:15. But he is so funny with his comment. He said "You should blog about it, Alice." And Patsy said he said "you can't get the 9:30 out of Alice" or something like that, i guess b/c when one of the women started chatting during stretch time about the movie Black Swan, I dove right in. You know me, I love to talk. You are right, the roads were really bad. I had to drive to Bergen County for a work assignment and i almost spun out several times. See you Monday morning--at 9:30!!!!!!
Nan, you are awesome getting to the gym by 6 two mornings a week. That is so, so good. I hope that you get some snow soon.
thank you all. love alice
