Good vs. Evil: The Power of Style

Yes, yes, fashion can definitely cushion one's walk through life. There is simply no denying it.

Take the Burberry scarf H. got me for Christmas--an exact replica of the one he bought me many years ago, which somehow went missing. I love it so much that I hate to take it off when I go to bed. Once, I didn't. It is 100 percent cashmere, and oh so soft. I feel oh so warm and polished in it, even though today I never got dressed beyond my yoga pants [so from the neck down, I looked, and felt, like quite a slug].

And...there's this little clothing boutique in town called Thread--on Watchung Avenue. I was really struggling with various dark, daunting issues yesterday--still am. But I would be lying if I said it did not lift my spirits to snag a beautiful, long, swingy golden chain necklace with lacy disk charms [$28] and a pair of adorable Vineyard Vines Fair Isle mittens with a fat pompom on each cuff.....50 percent off, so $27.50 vs. $55. It's also calming and refreshing to be in the presence of someone chic--like the sweet boutique owner, Kendra--and breathe deep while surrounded by lovely, new, tangible, desirable things. Things you can put your hands on, or into.

I can tell the Figmeister likes those soft knit mitts, too, so if they have another pair left tomorrow, I hope to get her one. Thread closed at 5 today, so I couldn't get there. Link: www.threadboutique.com.

We can all use a shot of style to soften the sharp edges.

Good night.

  1. You always look nice... I'm sure they are nice yoga pants. I am finding it hard to not be a slug now that I don't go to work every day. Maybe I ought to do what you do and throw something nice on top of my old jeans and tee while I am sitting here doing my things. Good idea for lifting the spirit, Alice. Love, Lin

  2. Hi Lin. thank you for saying that. and yes, i definitely think everyone will feel better if she/he gets dressed in something nice. When I was editing the Heloise column for GH, we once did a contest on the best tips you ever learned from your mother. One of them was to always get up, get dressed, do you hair and makeup etc. and then face your chores, your day. On that note, i better go get dressed now. I had boot camp today and am still in my workout clothes. Plan to build today's outfit around the new necklace, just as I sometimes build an hour of house cleaning around a vase of freshly arranged flowers. love alice xoxoxo

  5. Alice: 2 things--1) my mother used to say every morning that she "put her face on"!
    2) I see the Black Swan effect in your title of this entry!
