Moey's daughter--technically Laura Sgambati, but Lulu to me--came in second today out of about 50 teens in a singing contest at Garden State Plaza in Paramus. Moey called this morning to tell us they were going, but Figgy and I missed the message.
Moey didn't see the notice until she read the paper this morning--she thinks it was better that way, so Lulu didn't have too much time to be nervous before she took the stage to belt out "Baby."
First prize was a trip to L.A. for the premiere of Justin's movie, Never Say Never, and a chance to meet the heartthrob. Second prize will send Lulu and a guest to NYC in February for the premiere there--and a meet-and-greet with the star. The whole thing kind of brings to mind the Beatles, and the way American girls loved them so, lining up behind barriers, competing for tickets to see them.
I've seen Laura sing. She is really amazing and gifted. It is so foreign to someone like me--I still remember the pure terror of speaking in front of my high school classmates when I was running for student organization rep as a freshman, age 14.
Lulu has it all as a freshman, age 14. Stage presence, grace, beauty, composure--and gorgeous, flowing chestnut hair. And oh, the voice. I wish this young star all the best in life. She can sure carry the notes where she wants them to go. And now it seems the notes can carry her places, too.

Sweet dreams, baby.

My twelve year old has the walls of her room papered with JB posters. She would be so thrilled even to dream of winning something like that. She has the date of the local premiere marked on our calendar already. Your Lulu must be truly talented. How very exciting!
