The cookbook is exquisite. I've got to get to their shop. |
The wrappings elevate the bars to works of art, which they are. |
But yesterday, I succumbed. And let me tell you, Mast Brothers Chocolate: A Family Cookbook is one beautiful read, with simple, short, straightforward recipes [brownies, cookies, chocolate sauce] and photos you want to leap right into. The two brothers who make this artisanal bean-to-bar chocolate are originally from Iowa, and their story is sweet and inspiring.
I've been trying to avoid sugar. Some days are better than others. But I've heard from a couple of reliable sources [three, actually] that permitting oneself some high-quality dark chocolate is a way to eat a little bit, not a giant slice of fudge cake. And with Valentine's Day coming, I do think I'd like to make a special cocoa-based treat.
Meanwhile, I popped into Montclair Whole Foods and got two Mast Brothers bars tonight at $8.49 each. Brooklyn Blend is dark and earthy, seductive and true.
Good night to you. Hoping and praying for my Figgy--and my Punch.

Add me to the dark chocolate as the best low sugar treat crowd. I'm not a fan of the alcohol-sugar chocolates that claim their sugar isn't really sugar, but authentic very high number chocolate can be rich and exquisite. Of course, eating a whole half pound bar of very dark chocolate does in fact contain significant amounts of sugar. I know this from hard experience.
ReplyDeleteVery dark chocolate combines well with nuts and creme fraiche. My favorite indulgence that fully hits my sweet tooth but has very little sugar or other carbs and nothing fake is creme fraiche, blueberries, slivered almonds, and dark chocolate mini-chips - it doesn't take many chips to add flavor.
I'm a fan too of a few chocolate chips in my non-fat, plain yogurt. Combined with pomegranate seeds, a few nuts (pistachios are nice) and a dash of honey this makes a satisfying breakfast or snack that feels indulgent.
ReplyDeleteHey Nan and Kim...thanks for the notes. Your combinations sound SO GOOD and i was sure to buy creme fraiche and yogurt today at the store......I bought berries, too, but as soon as I buy them, they get eaten quite fast by others in house.....love alice xoxo
