Rolling: August: Osage County

Would you believe I was the only person in a theater that seats 131? I felt free to check my cell phone.
Been wanting to see this for a while. While H. was home doing homework and bedtime, dashed out on this snowy Monday night. Needed to get away.

Loved the footage of wide-open Oklahoma....and the old family homestead....and the dark secrets. The family is troubled; the film is sharp and insightful, with twists and turns. I have known alcoholics/addicts--and Meryl portrays one well. Like a gun ready to go off--or a viper ready to hiss and bite. [And come to think of it, I've been that way lately, too, though not from drinking.] The most poignant part was when we heard about her own monstrous mother. Isn't that the way alcoholism/addiction usually happens? Or am I wrong?

Julia Roberts also excellent as a tough daughter who has been through the mill with her mother before.

Good night.
