Stay in Today

That’s what my wise friend Jim says. Stay in today. I fret a lot about things I can’t control. I wish I could protect my good daughter, age 22, from romantic hurts and heartaches. From the unknown. I try to keep my involvement at arm’s length because I tend to get too enmeshed. I second guess, snoop in what I hope seems like casual conversation, weave imaginary stories. She has wisely blocked me from Facebook, and it’s a relief. It’s hard not to wonder and worry, since Figgy lives at home. I hope and pray, hope and pray. Stay in today. We can’t chart the paths for our teenage/young adult kids, as much as we want to. They will find their own way, just as we did. Proud of our Figgy’s laughter and love, her diligence, her talent. Her spunk and spirit, her passion for mosses and fish, her love for Punchy.

Good night.

  1. Thoughts will be with you when u pick up Punchy today, hope all goes well. Trusting the young adults in our lives to guide themselves safely is so hard that I attend a support group for that purpose. Happy Mother’s Day - hope staying in means a book and a nap!

    1. Hi Liz. Thank you. Happy Mother’s Day! I hope you enjoyed the graduation. Pittsburgh, right? Did I spell that right? I heard it’s a great city. Punchy’s baby sis so cute. Dan picking Punch up on his way home from DC today. I’m revealing in the peace and quiet right now. Happy Mother’s Day. The support group sounds like a wise resource I would embrace, too. Love Alice

    2. Jeez, I meant reveling in the peace and quiet. Curse you, spellcheck.

  2. Thinking of you, too, Alice, as you navigate the other side of Punch's trip.

    1. Thank you, Kim. I drove Punchy down to her mom's Saturday at 4:30 arrival and Dan picked her up today on the drive back from D.C. [off the route]. I think things are ok for Punchy. I am sure there will be some fallout. She loved the baby and is a baby expert--she knows all the babies on our block and watches closely how the moms take care of them. And I am just reading yesterday's Modern Love essay about the "mother hole" in the writer's heart and how everyone wants to be with their mommy. Love Alice
