Pool Pass

I can’t tell you how many summers since Figgy was a girl that I’ve gone to Montclair Town Hall to buy pool passes. I used to buy three but then it was usually Dan or I, not both of us, taking Fig. So I started to buy two. Last year, the Covid year, I only bought one, for young Skippy, since she’s old enough to go alone. And besides, pandemic hours for swimming were limited--and timed for social distancing, if that is even possible in a pool.

Over all of those hot months in those hot years, we rarely got our money’s worth. We also usually travel a lot by car in summer but so far, this year is different Monday to Friday, with our important family obligation.

But the temps have been so high and the pool nearest us is a quick walk or bike ride. It’s open 11 to 8 every day this year! Tonight, Skippy biked over at 7:26 for a quick dip and biked right back.

I might have joined her, but when it’s hot as hell, everything drains my energy, even getting to the pool. Moreover, I got my hair done yesterday and it’s been holding its wave so I didn’t want to get it wet.

The pool passes were worth it--$55 for Skip and $75 for me.

Good nite.

  1. There are maybe two or three days each summer when I wish I had access to a pool. There is nothing quite like it to get cool all over. The kids all had friends who could invite them to the small private pool clubs around here. But most had waiting lists for membership, so I never joined. I think you have a deal- especially close enough for bike-able!

    1. Hi Nan. Yes...this is a bargain. We have a private “beach club,” a pool, and you need to get references (!?) and it costs a lot. What’s nice is you can order in dinner there, a pizza, whatever, and stay late with the family. We have a very fancy pool club over the hill in another town, too....but thank God for Montclair Parks & Recreation....it is affordable. We have three town pools, but one is closed this summer, not sure why. Sending love. Thanks. Alice

  2. Our sons love to swim, so we joined private pool at the old house, looked for summer camps with swimming in the new one. Admire the families that arrange their lives to meet friends at the pool several evenings a week, such a nice summertime thing to do. Biking distance, cool!

  4. We do the town pool, too. James and Nora haven't gone for years. Luke is at peak bike-ride-to-the-pool age ... it's great. Also a bargain here in Glenside.
