Autumn in Montclair

I still haven’t finished my writing deadlines, so sitting here on the couch, getting my files/footwork for the two features organized while Dan has the original B&W “Frankenstein” movie on TV.  I might be able to knock one out tomorrow?

Today, the sky looked stormy and pretty as Punchy’s soccer game came to a close at 6:30 p.m. in Brookdale Park.

In the afternoon, Dan hung white bedsheets on the heads of the giant sunflowers he grew out front this summer. Now they are Halloween ghosts.

I went to my support group and going to another tomorrow morning.

I took a nice bath and even moisturized my face. I would like to do that every day but I get sloppy. Tired. Overwhelmed. Lazy. Slothful.

For dinner, I wished we were doing something “exciting” on a Saturday night, like going out for pizza, which I do not eat now because I eat too much of it, or getting Indian takeout. But instead I made a recipe inspired by one taught to me by my friend Rachy. I dredged thin chicken breast slices in whole wheat flour and browned them in a skillet with a little butter, a little walnut oil, garlic and capers. It was good, in spite of my low expectations going into a non-pizza tavern, non-Indian restaurant meal.

Good night.

  1. Yum! Your dinner sounds good!

Think about how you talk to yourself, and try to be kinder. Tired? Yes. Overwhelmed? Yes. Lazy? Slothful? No, do not say that, or even think it in those words. What you say to yourself matters. Of all the ways to think about how and why to modify my own self talk I’ve heard, the one that clicked for me is to talk to myself the way I would an employee falling short. (My language in the workplace was always more moderate than to family). You can still hold them accountable, but the goal is to get them to do better. “I know you are tired and overwhelmed, so you didn’t get the job done, and I know you regret it. Let’s see if we can’t reduce your burden a bit, get some tasks you can do, and see some success. What’s the most important thing to do right now. How about making some chicken for dinner?”

(I never live up to my ideals either, but I’m learning.)

    Xoxoxo, we’re all trying.
