The Things I Did Today That Were Not Work

I know I will miss my beloved Figgy in the fall when she goes to college........probably more than I can imagine. But today was one of those days when I was busy doing so many family/life things between work spurts--instead of the other way around--that I ended up feeling resentful. And here I am working at night...again.

True, she doesn't have her driver's license yet, so that's partly our responsibility. And this is an unusual day because Fig had to go into the city to get paperwork signed for Senior Option, the one month starting May 20 that approved Montclair High seniors can spend interning in their field of interest rather than going to school. [They go in for seminars on Fridays.]

8:30 Get Fig up; eat breakfast together.
9:10 Leave for Private Benjamin in town with H. And it was rough waters.
10:30 Whisk home to pick up Figgy and leave directly for NYC. Drop H. off to write at New York Public Library all day and drop Fig off by 11:30 to meet with jewelry designer she will intern with on 55th Street.
11:30 to 12:30ish Circle, drive, spin wheels while waiting for Figgy. Didn't want to pay to park in garage. Finally stopped car in a commercial vehicle zone on Second Avenue and somehow avoided ticket while waiting for her.
12:30 Leave city, battle heavy gridlock. Get dirty look from at least one pedestrian, shaking her head as in "Crazy driver."
1:00 Arrive at gas station off Route 3 West because driving on fumes. But wait a while because only man working there is high up on a ladder hovering near the traffic, changing the numbers on the price per gallon sign.
1:30  Home. Check email, then out again to bank to deposit check. Make work phone call. Go to sandwich shop for healthy lunch. Starbucks for small chocolate treat.
2:00  Banking review, to be sure we have enough money to pay this month's mortgage.
2:30 Lie down. Too jittery to nap, know I should be working. And plus, it's too hot.
3:00 Try to figure out how much my Caremark Rx prescription refill will cost, since our bare-bones plan only covers $500 in Rx benefits annually.
3:20 Drive to other end of town to get Sug from groomer. Pretty fresh bows, powdery-clean fragrance on her fur. Return home.
4:00 Figgy asks if I can drive her to other end of town to boyfriend's* house. I do. Get dirty look from driver as I pull out onto Valley Road in the middle of a long line of cars waiting at light.
4:15 Passing Whole Foods on way back, so go in to get dinner ingredients. Skim receipt. Avocados on sale 2 for $3 but they charge me $2 each, so have to go to courtesy counter to get $2 refund on the four I bought.
5:00 Home. Check work emails, start thinking work mode. Try once again to sign onto FAFSA website, to update our tax/income info, because Fig's college financial aid hinges on verification once 2012 taxes are filed. Still can't do it, b/c our new PIN hasn't been authorized.
7:00 Go back to get Figgy.
7:40 Home. Make guacamole with 3 avocados, pureed garlic, fresh lemon and lime juices, sea salt, cracked black pepper and a dash of hot sauce. Serve with [small amount of] blue corn chips.
on and on...I am too cranky to write more. And sorry if I bored you! I finally did work. I feel this entry will be like an archaeological dig I can refer to later on....to review the findings.

Good night.

TCOY
  1. Private Benjamin. Tough but true.
  2. Walked Sug around block with Barbara and Benz.
  3. Cherry tomatoes and avocados and lots of ice water, even a big bottle to take in car when drove to NYC.
  4. Made Caremark call.
*We like this young man. He lives completely on the other edge of town and up the mountain and has walked to our house, which takes him 50 minutes. He doesn't have a car yet, either.
