View of the salt marsh. above and below. Walk here and leave your cares behind. |
Whale bones. Wellfleet was a whaling village. |
Nat, one of the naturalists who walks the trails, showed Nikki and me a nesting goose through binoculars and telescope. |
The blue chair from Henry Beston's Outermost House. |
When I closed up our house today, lowering the thermostats, turning off the water and the power breakers for the electric stove and hot water heater, unplugging the fridge and the toaster, emptying the trash, locking up and pulling the drapes, I thought of Dad. I went through that drill with him so many times on Cape Cod. I miss you, Dad. In so many ways and for so many reasons.
Happy note: Anne, Nikki and I went to the Hot Chocolate Sparrow for a farewell Mocha Sparrow drink for the road. I loved looking through the glass and watching the ladies hand-dipping glossy dark chocolate truffles and caramel turtles for the Sparrow's busy candy counter. I tried something new today: Dark chocolate Beach Bark, decorated with small milk or white chocolate fish and/or shells and sprinkled with sea salt from Cape Cod Saltworks in East Orleans; $3.95 a pack and very good.
On Route 6 West, we passed Barnstable, a town on the Cape that sent police backup to help find the second Boston Marathon bomber today.
Anyway, happy to be home. And yes, doing a midnight pickup of Figgy since H. has been on duty the last few nights.
