Fig and I leaving 9 A.M. to drive to Greenwich Village for the Parsons accepted student event @ 10. [H. not going b/c his brother is here for just one night and leaving midmorning.]
We're thrilled for Fig to go to Parsons and pursue her fashion design dream. She's thrilled. She's been in the accepted students' chat room a lot and loving the people she's "met" there, who are from all over.
I haven't blogged about it yet b/c frankly, the cost is daunting and the original, very generous scholarship/financial aid offer will likely change by a lot b/c our income went up in 2012 due to H.'s book contract and the offer was based on 2011. I haven't been able to submit the new info to Parsons via the online IRS data retrieval tool yet b/c it takes a few weeks after electronic tax filing to get there.
Hello, this is me, Alice, and already I'm starting to worry. Will the workload be impossible? Just went online and found comments from current Parsons students who say you have no life b/c you're working so hard and that you pay a lot to be in NYC but don't get to enjoy it b/c you're pulling all-nighters. [And then I remember my cousin Lin, a gifted artist herself, telling me she was hiring once and the person who said they had gone to Parsons didn't even know a basic computer program for designers/artists.]
Will Fig stay healthy? Organized? Will she have a crazy roommate? Will she be a crazy roommate? Will she cover the room with crumpled skirts, dresses, pants, shorts, socks, sweaters and underwear as she does here? Will she take care of herself? If the loan is huge, will she manage to pay it back?
Also, there may be a family worry gene. When Sis was in college, I remember my Mom once calling in the big guns at St. Mary's: Pray for MaryAnne, she whispered to me. She's taking her organic chemistry final today. She also cut an article about a Rutgers campus rape out of the newspaper before Dad read it, so he wouldn't worry about Sis.
One day @ at a time. One day @ a time. One day @ a time. We all have different paths through life and we all have different skills in our backpacks, different wiring in our brains, different maps in our hearts. God, please bless Figgy and keep her safe, healthy and happy.
Will report back later.

Yay! Parsons is a great school and I'm sure she'll find happiness and success there. I completely get your worries, I have my own set for each girl (as I did for Y.) yet many of your worries are common to all my lists. She'll be fine and it's nice that she's reasonably close. That will provide her with a good support system. Congratulations, Fig and mom and dad!
ReplyDelete[Pray for MaryAnne, she whispered to me. She's taking her organic chemistry final today.] This made me smile. I can picture your mom saying this to you. And the "keep her safe..." prayer. I said the same exact one when L. was away at college. Figgy will be fine. You and H. will be fine, too. She's talented and smart. And that girl from Parsons (that didn't know what a bleed was) probably missed more than one class... she said that she must have been out the day they taught it! And, oh by the way, I think in most arts schools you live and breathe your craft and do not have a life. They were 4 of the happiest years of my life. Love, Lin
ReplyDeleteKim, thank you for the good wishes....yes, i guess we moms have a lot of common-denominator worries. Lin, thank you for the note and the insights. I was glad we had a chance to talk tonight. even i know what a bleed is, though i would have no idea at all how to make one on a page. love, alice xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteOh, how exciting!!! I hope the new financial aid package comes through. I'm going to pass on a little tip from my dad ... if you don't like the new results, it might be worth making an appointment to go in to the financial aid office and explain your situation. He used his Irish charm on more than one occasion to eke out just a bit more money for my sister and me. Also, they should be pretty familiar with freelancers/creative types who have variable incomes!
ReplyDeleteEileen, that is a great tip and I will definitely do that. Yesterday they said their office is open daily, M to F and we can pop in. Your Dad sounds smart and charming. love alice
