A Nice Young Man from Maine

H.'s brother Patrick [of H.'s four older brothers, Pat is closest in age to him] is here with his love, Martha, and Martha's son, James, who is 12, about to be 13 in May. They stopped over for a night on their drive from Maine to Anapolis, where Martha's family is from. It's refreshing to have them here. And James is really nice. I love the stories he shared from his home state:
  • About Maiden's Cliff in Camden, and the myths/ghost stories surrounding it--a young girl fell off it in the 1860s.  We've hiked there with H.'s brother John.
  • About his best birthday, when he fished in a lake and went on a canoe.
  • About funny people he knows, like the boy who put on gas mask and a Speedo and rode a unicycle.
  • About the Dunkin' Donuts truck he saw on a highway once, where the cab was shaped like a coffee cup and the back like a donut box.
  • About the sky up in Maine--how it's black, with stars. Our sky looks smoggy tonight. James speculated that it's because we are close to New York. I think it's because of rain clouds.
He and Figgy are watching a horror movie now. I made them popcorn. The adults are going to sleep. I'm getting up early to make the blueberry muffins from My Father's Daughter, by Gwyneth Paltrow before James and family head on their way . [I tried to resist buying another cookbook, my true weakness, but found it discounted in Target and discovered I really love Gwyneth's engaging writing style, the people photos, the food photos and the recipes--and the story of her close relationship with her Dad.]

  1. Hey Alice,
Do you get Gwyneth's newsletter Goop? I do. It's actually pretty good. She gets a lot of crap for it ("she's a know-it-all; she has too much money and time on her hands") and some of it is precious, but I still kinda enjoy it. Would be curious to hear what you think.

  2. Hi Kim. Yes, i checked out Goop a long time ago and did subscribe but don't really read it. Now I might. I think i had a hard time believing that a star like this married to Cold Play's Chris Martin was really into and doing all of this stuff. But the more I read by Gwyneth, the more I truly like her. Her cookbook was on NY Times bestseller list. I got it for $21 vs. $30 cover price @ Target but I think it's $19 on Amazon. The blueberry muffins were really easy and it is a recipe Gywneth's mother Blythe Danner made all the time for G. when G. was expecting her daughter Apple. Everyone loved them today. I used frozen blueberries, also bought at Target the night I bought the cookbook. [produce from Target--weird, I know]. i think i resisted Goop because I was like--you're already a gorgeous actress and now you're a writer/blogger/crafter, too? but now I can see how catty that was. why not? love alice

  3. Those blueberry muffins are excellent! I bought the book to review it for a blog. The blog no longer exists, but I like the cookbook anyway! I've made a few things out of there, and they've all been great. Who knew?

  4. Yes, Eileen, those muffins are so simple and so good. Tonight I made the Puttanesca sauce from the book, too. Glad to hear from you and hope all is well. alice
