Haul out the Holly

Tonight we went to two things...first, the annual auction at the Unitarian Church of Montclair, where our friend Michael is instrumental. It was like something out of "A Prairie Home Companion," and I mean that in a good way. Homespun and friendly--you can see everyone from the mayor [past or present] to the well-known local elder care attorney.

You get a number and bid for anything from hand-knit sweaters to homemade cakes and pies [baked at your request]. Prize goes to the highest bidder. We had to leave early to get to our friend Susan's annual Christmas party, so we don't know yet if we outbidded others and got the movie gift card, restaurant gift certificate, or cable-knit cardigan. [When you walk away, someone may sneak up and scribble a higher bid.] H. also bidded and got a spot at a scotch and poker party and I got two spots @ a death by chocolate party in Montclair.

Susan's party, high up on Highland Road......leaded glass windows....Christmas wreaths.....her Christmas dress......baked Brie....table covered with wine bottles....her mother's long red holiday hostess skirt....fires crackling in pit outside and hearth inside.....poinsettias....red velvet bows....rhinestones, halter necklines, clingy sweaters, boots, lacy stockings, blonde updos, high heels. Figgy [after babysitting] in a purple sweater and pink beads, happy to see Susan's girl Charlotte, her friend since age 5.

Good night.
