Article Archive: Going for the Gold in Little Silver

Rollin' on the river: I like this riverboat sign, celebrating the town's location on the Shrewsbury River.
Drove down to Little Silver yesterday [What a cute name for a town, Sis said] to tour the $4.9 million Hartshorne Mansion so I can write about it for Asp1re Magazine. It was built in 1929 for Harold Hartshorne, who went on to win gold medals in Olympic figure skating in the 1930s and 40s. He had a pond put on the property so he could practice; it's still there.

The showhouse is open to the public through June 9 as a fundraiser for the Visiting Nurse Association Health Group. Check statelyhomesbythesea.com for more info. Tickets are $35 each [seniors, $25]. The rooms are beautifully designed, especially the kitchen!!!!

Right now I am about dying of the heat and have to crank up our bedroom A.C. and go to sleep. Also another very sad day, as Figgy's friend's Dad, age 58, died in a small plane crash. He was a flight instructor and was with a student. Hearts as heavy as this heat. Craig is into the heavens now.

  2. Alice, I'm so sorry to hear about those two deaths. Our town is a bit like Montclair, and there have been a couple of recent, shocking deaths here, too. I didn't *know* the people, but in a town like this, I sort of kind of knew them, and knew many of their friends. It's very sad.

I couldn't help but peek at the Finger Lakes photog story. Nice work! Glad to see they are keeping you busy!
