Rolling: 12 Years a Slave

H. and I went to see this tonight. Here's the IMDB summary: In the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.

The movie is revealing, troubling and at times, very hard to watch. Graphic beatings. Close look at historic New Orleans area with its architecture and drooping trees. Seeing slavery in full color....parents separated from their children....masters sleeping with slaves....ladies of the house as vicious and narrow minded....the backbreaking work of cotton picking...ugly leather whips.....lynchings.....and a single magical moment in a sunny farm field, where a slave is peacefully making corn husk dolls. [I think they were fashioned from corn husks.]

Must go to sleep. Rising by 5 A.M. to go watch my friends in Men's Health Urbanathlon tomorrow--a 10-mile run and obstacle course at Citi Field in Queens, NY...involves jumping over taxis and buses, shimmying under cars, etc. etc.

This is my friends practicing! Tomorrow is the big race and Punch and I going to cheer them on.
