Gift List of Maine Riches

1. The petite bouquet of orange and gold nasturtium from my sister-in-law Sheila's garden, which she brought to brunch for my mother-in-law Mary's 87th birthday.
2. The shimmering lakes and little lake cabins we passed on our drive back to Jersey today. Many tiny, tidy hideaways had picnic tables outside--instant space upgrade for dining.
3. Toddy Pond Farm creamy vanilla bean yogurt in big fat glass jars [$4 deposit on each]. Tastes like crème brûlée.
4. H.'s brother John's apple trees, which he planted as seedlings decades ago, now loaded with red apples like rubies on a mountain queen's very long, gnarled chain.
5. The burnt orange and fiery crimson leaves we saw on our journey home.
6. The opulent red and yellow streaked dahlias in John's neighbor's front garden. Stunning new blooms in front of old red brick building.
7. The bridge that spans the bay.
8. The hilly downtown in Belfast.
9. Mount Battie, with its breathtaking view of the coastal village of Camden--and of islands in the sea.
10. The sight of H. and his four big brothers, Mainers all, sitting around an old country table at 7:30 a.m., cradling bottomless cups of strong coffee and sharing scrambled eggs, buttered toast and love--gruffly, begrudgingly or disguised in ribs and barbs. It's a gift to see them together, dressed in cozy fleeces and sweatshirts. H. cherishes them [and their little sister in the family] so very much. John, Mike, Dave and Pat are his well-worn lucky charms, burnished by having spent so many years at the ready in his heart, and in his blue jeans pocket.

Good night. More to come tomorrow.
