Big Screen: Paterson

Wife + husband surrounded by black and white. Link from HERE.
Mimi and Poppy took Punch for the weekend, so H. and I went tonight to the 9:30 showing of "Paterson," named for the sometimes gritty, bustling, working-class city right up the road from Montclair. It's a city with huge, crashing waterfalls, a history in manufacturing and textiles and a place famous poets, including Allen Ginsberg and William Carlos Williams, have called home.

The main character, played by Adam Driver, Hannah's love Adam on "Girls," is also named Paterson, and was born there. He's a full-time bus driver for NJ Transit and a part-time poet.

Adam's wife, charming Laura, is played by Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani. Laura is obsessed with painting things--like the shower curtain--black and white and baking dozens of dark cupcakes w white icing squiggles and dots to sell at the farmers' market. [The B&W decorating theme is overkill, but I like her B&W fashion choices--and the two-tone cupcakes.]

I recommend the movie, but not if you get antsy watching days go by and routines being observed. The pace can feel a bit slow. The words of Paterson's poems appear line by line on the screen.

Still, if you are not a writer, "Paterson" will make you want to be one. If you already are, it will make you want to carve out more time for your craft, and share it with the world.
