Ash Wednesday Again

The beginning of Lent always races up behind me before I know it...and I forget to skip meat for a day or to plan to give anything up. I admire my friend Eileen, mom of three who gives up Facebook for 40 days!

Repent and be glad, Father Marc said as he smudged the sooty ashes on my forehead at the packed 4 p.m. service.

Punchy, in her gold sequined ankle boots, hid out in the back vestibule of the church, refusing to get ashes, just like last year. I'm not sure why. But then she got surprised when the vice principal from her school, Mr. Krenn, walked by and said hello. He was there for ashes, too. She was caught off-guard and panting, and then knelt with me briefly in a pew for some prayers.

The rest of my day, involving another daughter, was rocky, to say the least. Ugly, really. Painful.

Good night.
