I’d never seen a graveside military salute before. Sis’s husband, Don, and my Uncle Aldo were both in the Navy and Sis had the folded flag but I don’t remember at Uncle Al’s?
I liked the white gloves, the precise flag folding and the bugler’s rendition of “Taps.” We used to sing that by Girl Scout campfires.
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.
God bless my Aunt Gloria.

ReplyDeleteI’ve been to a few and now taps always makes me think of funerals. I have my issues with the military, and the lack of advocacy for the ranks, but the death rituals are respectful to the dead and the survivors, no matter what rank. I am always impressed and thoughtful after a military funeral.

agreed! also have issues with military but found my Uncle Roy's military funeral very moving. xoxo
ReplyDeleteLiz and Kim, I can be out of the loop sometimes....issues with the military? not sure what you mean....
DeleteI'm so sorry to hear about your uncle. I know what it's like to lose those links to the previous generation (our parents). Alice, I do not remember what kind of military ceremony took place at my father's funeral in 1989. I know that my mother did receive a folded flag. Mike recently found that flag in his attic and had it encased for me in mahogany with a brass nameplate. it is sitting on on my mantle, occupying a place of honor. I think my father would like that. he was very patriotic.
ReplyDeleteBack to work now on this snowy day. Love, Lin
Hi Lin...how nice that Mike did that with your Dad's flag! Love Al
