I'm Writing a Mystery Story in Parts on Substack

This is fun, a serial mystery. Two installments so far. Start with the first.
I believe you can read it for free and maybe then subscribe if you choose? Here is the link: https://alicegarbarinihurley.substack.com/p/1-knock-knock-whos-there?r=9z52t&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Substack is a fertile field for writers. And many hook you in and you want to keep reading their posts.

I try not to have too many subscriptions (about $5 to $7 per month, or a higher yearly fee). They add up.

I have loved/paid for the following. I have cancelled three to save money. It's wild game hunting out there. Everywhere you turn, another good shoot. (I have never hunted in my life.)

  • Homeward (Amanda Hesser, NY Times, Cooking for Mr. Latte, Food52)
  • P.S. by Plum Sykes (British, Vogue, top style writer, sometimes gossipy)
  • xoxoDorie (Dorie Greenspan, baker, cookbook author, charming writing voice)
  • Turns Out, I Have Notes (consciousness-raising posts from my friend Kim Flodin)
  • Codes of Style
  • La Briffe (the great Ruth Reichl, NY Times, cookbooks, memoirs, Gourmet) La briffe is an affectionate old French term meaning food or a good meal
  • Girls of a Certain Age (Kim France, Lucky magazine, fun reporting but tempts me to shop)
What do you love on Substack?

Keeping the “Short” in Short Story

Capote’s “A Christmas Memory,” a return to his Alabama boyhood, is my favorite short story of all time. It was first published in now defunct Mademoiselle magazine in December 1956. Book link from here.

I’ve been planning to enter a short story contest. The deadline is two days away (Saturday). I started the story, but...

Calling on the spirits of some of my favorite writers--Truman Capote, Joan Didion, Sylvia Plath, O. Henry, Flannery O’Connor, not to compare myself to their greatness, but because I admire it--to help and inspire me.

Not operating in a cloud of sugar and carbs should lend me clarity. I made myself write this latest Medium post yesterday so I could clear the air, not carry guilt and shame about overeating, or what I was trying to hide underneath it. Even though I spent the bulk of the day on Addiction Recovery writing, at least it was still writing, the craft I need to call on.

Addiction Recovery Story #27, Pink Magnolia: Sugar Addict Slips at Night

Have a good Thursday.

Peter, Paul and Mary

Their music has been keeping me company. Love to slip the CD into my laptop while I work. Especially inspired by "Weave Me the Sunshine."

Good night.

TCOY
  1. Made it to 8 a.m. yoga and meditation class taught by my friend Julie. She had us do a 20-minute "Automatic Writing" exercise. She said it's another form of meditation. The task was not to pause the pen, not to stop writing the entire time. The 20 minutes went fast. The opening prompt was: At this point in my life, what is my perspective on meditation? But believe me, it went to some important thoughts and insights.
  2. Biked to town for salon blowout and bank, to make mortgage payment.
  3. Had some healthy food today: black bean burger with avocado; salmon and salad. But I can do much, much better, trust me.
