Dollars & Butter

  • Dollars spent today: $0.
  • Sticks of butter used to bake large pan of Melissa Clark’s Lemon 🍋 Squares [with shortbread crust] to bring to BBQ: 3.
  • Plump organic lemons zested and squeezed: 5.
  • Free-range eggs cracked and beaten: 6.
  • Squares actually eaten by people at party: 6.
  • Squares I took home and froze, hoping P will like them: 12 plus. [Dan took P and pal to Point Pleasant for boardwalk and beach.]
  • Other from-scratch desserts at BBQ: 4. [Very good Smores Cheesecake w gooey torched marshmallow top; brownies; nut brownies; and fresh fruit salad,]
  • Percent realization that I should stick to bringing a crystal bowl of plain raspberries instead of going to all this trouble, butter, sugar and labor: 90.
  • From 1 to 10, how much my creative side enjoyed the baking process today: 4.
  • Hours since Dan & co. left: 10.
They should be home by 11. Good night.

  1. I really like how you evaluated how happy the process made you from 1 to 10. I think that could be a powerful tool re: food eaten for me or extra responsibilities taken on. Must mull over.

    1. Thanks, Kim. Yes....I love the creativity of baking but have to figure this out....I probably should have cleaned up around here instead of creating a boatload of bowls and pans and lemon squeezer to wash...but dan had the car and I didn't feel like biking or walking to store for berries or side dish ingredients....I had butter, sugar, flour and a bag of fresh lemons...and then the worst part is when you return home with most of the bars! The neighborhood crowd was much smaller at our friends' house this year--so....live and learn, as my mother used to say. We're going on a little picnic today and will bring the bars in cute tin.
